The Man I Want to Be Chris Young moved from Nashville Star winner to real Nashville star in only a few years, thanks to a dark baritone far beyond his years and a strong ear for the lyrical country music of his youth. Young earned a recording deal with RCA after winning the reality television competition in 2006. After a rocky start, he found radio gold with his second album, The Man I Want to Be, released in 2009, which included the beautiful, seductive blockbuster “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song),” his first number one song on the Billboard Country Airplay charts. He remained at the top of the charts for the following decade with hits like “Tomorrow,” “You,” “Neon,” “I’m Comin’ Over,” and “Losing Sleep,” songs that cemented his reputation as an old-school singer. As a result of his achievement, he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2017. Young continued to be a hitmaker far into the 2020s, reaching number one with “Famous Friends,” a duet with Kane Brown, in 2021.

Young is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and is the grandson of legendary Louisiana Hayride singer Richard Yates. He first gained national notice in 2006 when he participated on the Nashville Star television program. Young’s vocal talents initially emerged in elementary school children’s theater performances, and he pushed himself into studying everything he could about music, especially country music, with his family’s full support. He was already performing clubs in the Nashville region by the time he was a senior in high school, and his self-released first album was out before he even graduated. Young went to Belmont University in Nashville and then Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro for college, all while doing 150 live concerts each year. He was offered and accepted a job fronting the house band at Cowboy’s in Arlington, Texas, where a fan insisted he apply for the Nashville Star TV program.

Chris Young Young finally made the journey to Houston and passed the test, and RCA Records rewarded him handsomely with a contract. In 2006, Young released his first single, “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” a song he co-wrote with Larry Wayne Clark, followed by a Buddy Cannon-produced album titled simply Chris Young later that year. In 2009, he released his second album, The Man I Want to Be, which was produced by James Stroud. Young’s third album, Neon, didn’t earn gold (The Man I Want to Be did), but it did include “Tomorrow,” a heartfelt ballad that became his greatest success to date, hitting number one on the Billboard country charts and breaking into the pop Top 40 on its way to platinum. “You,” Neon’s second song, also reached number one on the country charts, while “Neon” and “I Can Take It From There” were the next two successes.

A.M. In the autumn of 2013, Young released his lighter, livelier third album, A.M., which was preceded by the party song “Aw Naw,” which reached number 16 on the Billboard charts. With the gentler “Who I Am with You” and “Lonely Eyes,” songs that charted in 2014, A.M. scored two more country Top Ten successes. Young returned in the autumn of 2015 with another Top Ten single, “I’m Comin’ Over,” which also served as the title track for his fifth album, which was released in November of that year. Following “I’m Comin’ Over,” “Think of You,” a duet with Cassadee Pope, reached number two on Billboard’s U.S. Hot Country chart, while “Sober Saturday Night,” a Vince Gill duet, reached number 31 later that year. It Must Be Christmas was released during the 2016 holiday season and reached number four on Billboard’s Country Albums list. In October 2017, he released Losing Sleep, his sixth original album.

In 2019, Young started releasing songs from a new album, with “Raised on Country” hitting number five on Billboard Country Airplay and “Drowning” reaching number 25. Young returned to the top of the charts in 2021 with “Famous Friends,” a duet with Kane Brown that charted before the album of the same name was released in August.
