Going Out in Style Boston’s Dropkick Murphys have established a reputation as one of America’s most renowned Celtic punk groups, drawing inspiration from British Oi!, American hardcore, and traditional Irish music. The band started as a furious, but relatively simple punk band in the late 1990s, but over time evolved to incorporate traditional Irish folk instruments and melody into their chaotic style. The Murphys won over both traditional punk fans and mainstream revelers with songs about working-class troubles, street-tough solidarity, and the joys found at the bottom of a bottle, especially after their song “Shipping Off to Boston” was featured in Martin Scorsese’s 2006 Oscar-winning film The Departed. The band’s popularity grew considerably in the following years, with albums such as 2011’s Going Out in Style and 2017’s 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory regularly appearing in the Top Ten. They established the Claddagh Fund to assist community-based non-profits and have basically become regional heroes in their hometown, as well as being involved in charity causes and politics. Turn Up That Dial, the Murphys’ eleventh studio album, was released in 2021, twenty-five years after they began their career.

Boys on the Docks Dropkick Murphys was founded in 1996 in South Boston by singer Mike McColgan, guitarist Rick Barton, and bassist Ken Casey, with a succession of drummers rotating through the lineup until regular Matt Kelly was added in 1997. After a series of EPs, including Fire & Brimstone, Tattoos & Scally Caps, and Boys on the Docks, the Murphys signed to Hellcat Records and released Do or Die in 1998, which was produced by Lars Frederiksen of Rancid. McColgan left the band shortly after (he subsequently formed the similar Street Dogs) and was replaced by Al Barr for the follow-up, 1999’s The Gang’s All Here.

Mob Mentality Mob Mentality, a split record with the Business, was released in mid-2000, just as the band was undergoing a major rebranding. After founding guitarist Rick Barton left the band to marry, Marc Orrell came in to make their five-piece configuration a septet. James Lynch has joined the band as guitarist, while bagpiper Spicy McHaggis and mandolinist Ryan Foltz have also joined to add to the band’s growing Celtic flavor. Bassist Ken Casey took up producing responsibilities for their third studio album, 2001’s Sing Loud, Sing Proud, which included collaborations with ex-Pogue Shane MacGowan and Cock Sparrer’s Colin McFaull.

Live on St. Patrick's Day From Boston, MA The following year, when Live on St. Patrick’s Day from Boston, MA was published in the summer, their Irish patriotism showed through. The performance was a blazing example of their aggressive and energetic shows, recorded during the year’s largest Irish-American festival in a town renowned for its extensive Irish ancestry. In June of 2003, the band released Blackout, which included new piper musician Scruffy Wallace and accordionist Tim Brennan as they prepared for the annual Vans Warped Tour (who further took over mandolin and tin whistle after Foltz left following some touring). On their mid-2004 EP Tessie, the Murphys remixed the Boston Red Sox anthem “Tessie,” which went on to become the theme song for the Sox’s World Series run that year and was used in the film Fever Pitch. Warrior’s Code was released in 2005, and one of its tracks, “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” became their greatest success after being included in the Martin Scorsese film The Departed in 2006. Soon later, the Murphys produced The Meanest of Times, a compilation of songs about family loyalty that was released in mid-September 2007 and included guest performances by Spider Stacy of the Pogues and Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners. After lead guitarist Orrell’s departure in 2008, the band welcomed multi-instrumentalist Jeff DaRosa into the fold and elevated Brennan to lead guitar.

Live on Lansdowne, Boston MA In 2010, he published Live on Lansdowne, Boston MA, a CD/DVD of songs selected during a week of St. Patrick’s Day performances in Boston in 2009. The band turned inside to construct a concept album for their second studio album, using their personal experiences to create the fictitious figure Cornelius Larkin. Going Out in Style, their seventh studio album, was released in 2011 on their Born & Bred label. The band followed up with Live at Fenway in 2012 before releasing their eighth studio album, Signed and Sealed in Blood, the following year. 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory, the Murphys’ eighth studio album, was released in early 2017. The band relocated to El Paso, Texas for the full creative process, making it their first album produced outside of Massachusetts. It was published via the band’s own label, Born & Bred Records, and was inspired by the group’s work with the Claddagh Fund for recovering addicts. 11 Short Stories opened at number eight on the Billboard 200 upon its release. Following its release, the band embarked on a worldwide tour, which included North American performances with Rancid. COVID-19 began recording their tenth album in 2018, with a few singles released in the meantime, and by 2020, with tours on hiatus, the band was focused on completing it. Instead of the angry content of their previous albums, the band chose to write upbeat, singalong, feel-good songs, as well as a tribute to Barr’s father and the many victims killed by COVID-19. Turn Up That Dial, the resultant album, was released in early 2021.
