Rochelle Fleming, Joyce Jones, and Annette Guest created the R&B trio First Choice, which began as the Debonettes and played throughout Philadelphia. Norman Harris, a Philly soul guitarist, composer, and producer, introduced the group to radio DJ Georgie Woods, who produced First Choice’s first single, “This Is the House Where Love Died,” which got exposure in Philly and other cities but failed to chart nationwide. Their second song, “Armed and Extremely Dangerous,” produced by Harris, was their first major success, reaching number 11 R&B for Stan Watson’s Philly Groove label in early 1973. It was also a Top 20 success in the United Kingdom. In the autumn of 1973, the album Armed and Extremely Dangerous was published. The tight rhythm unit of guitarist Harris, bassist Ron Baker, and drummer Earl Young, who were members of MFSB, the house band for Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, backed First Choice on this collection as well as the majority of their subsequent albums. Though the group had several high-charting disco successes, their following song, “The Player, Pt. 1,” was their highest-charting R&B single, reaching number seven R&B in summer 1974. The group’s second album, The Player, was released in the autumn of 1974 and charted at number 36 on the R&B chart.
First Choice hit with “Gotta Get Away (From You Baby)” in spring 1976 and “Let Him Go” in autumn 1976 after switching to Warner Bros., and released an album, So Let Us Entertain You (number 53, R&B). Joyce Jones departed the group in 1977, and Ursula Herring took her place. Norman Harris founded Gold Mind Records the next year, which was distributed by dance label pioneer Salsoul Records. In the summer of 1977, First Choice signed with Gold Mind, and their first single for the label, the ultra-catchy “Doctor Love,” charted at number 23 R&B. Delusions, the trio’s finest album, was released that autumn and included lyrically dense dance songs as well as beautiful ballads, as well as giving Philadelphia native Fleming her biggest showcase yet, showcasing one of the most unique lead singers in soul/dance/pop music. Hold Your Horses, their second Gold Mind LP, was released in March 1979, and the title tune became a dance hit. Debbie Martin took over for Ursula Herring in the same year. Salsoul stopped operations in 1983 to concentrate on the growing home video industry by launching their First Choice Video subsidiary, and the three separated the following year. Fleming reformed First Choice in 1987 with her cousin Laconya Fleming and Lawrence Cottel, who released the song “Love Itch” for Prelude Records. Rochelle Fleming continued to record throughout the United States and Europe in the 1990s.
The first choice – love thang is a song by American singer-songwriter D’Angelo. It was released as the lead single from his third album, Voodoo (2000).
