Prince Abdulai Baba Alhassan, founder and executive director of the Foundation for Reconciliation and Democracy (FORDEM) in Ghana, has called on political parties to restore confidence in state institutions to deepen democracy and grow the nation.

“We must all do our part to restore confidence in public institutions and their independence, especially the Electoral Commission, the Judiciary, the Ghana Police Service, civil society groups and the media.”

He said everyone should work to ensure that institutions remain neutral without political bias, in order to promote peace and unity in the country.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday, Prince Al-Hassan said that politics in Ghana has been marked by violence in recent times, especially during and after the 2020 elections, when leading politicians and their supporters witnessed waves of attacks on each other in the media.

He said people can express their opinions in a humble manner and not incite violence. “It is said that politics does everything, and therefore the basic principles of democracy must be able to work in all areas of our lives to ensure the socio-economic and political development of Ghana.

Prince Al Hassan said that the democratic process involves much more than elections and that the basic principles of democracy must be observed if Ghana is to enjoy harmonious peace and unity and not be a divided nation.

According to him, the political environment is characterized by violence, crime, corruption and bribery as a result of nepotism, tribalism and nepotism, which inhibits the progress of the nation and fuels distrust of state institutions.

Commenting on the recent inauguration of the eighth Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, the Executive Director of FORDEM said that some new Members of Parliament had gone astray by electing a Speaker rather than leading by example as legislators.

According to him, such behavior by some members of parliament is harmful to the socio-political development of democracy in the country and should be despised.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which play a key role in the current political landscape and are at the forefront of multi-party democracy in the country, are not setting a good example, but rather causing political tension and panic among citizens.

He stated that it is important for those involved to actively defend the country’s democracy and not the interests of their various political parties. He added that individuals or groups should exercise their right to protest government decisions in a peaceful, respectful and non-violent manner.

“The rule of law, the fundamental principle of human rights and justice, freedom of the countryside and freedom of expression are fundamental principles of democracy. Let’s make sure they work to strengthen our democracy³d, he said.
