Lionheart H.C. McEntire (also known as Heather McEntire) is most known for her work as a member of the bands Mount Moriah and Bellafea, as well as her solo work. She has a beautiful country voice with the unyielding drive of a punk rocker. McEntire started exploring the atmospheric aspect of Southern roots music with Mount Moriah, and she delved further into this area with her solo work, blending the artistic side of indie rock with melodies and vocal lines that hearken back to classic country and folk. Her solo debut, Lionheart, released in 2018, offered fresh variants on her approach, while Eno Axis, released in 2020, amplified the indie rock aspect of the formula.

Heather Cecelia McEntire was born on September 13, 1981, in a small town in North Carolina. Her parents were evangelical Christians who worked for Billy Graham’s television ministry, and she grew up in a rural town. McEntire grew up listening to gospel, bluegrass, and Christian country music as a child. She didn’t feel free to embrace herself as a lesbian and leave her Christian background until she got to college (where she studied creative writing and women’s studies). She also worked at a college radio station, where she was heavily influenced by punk music.

Cavalcade McEntire began to play guitar in the early 2000s and co-founded the indie rock band Bellafea, which published an EP, Family Tree, in 2005 and signed a contract with Southern Records, which released the album Cavalcade in 2008. McEntire created Mount Moriah with Horseback guitarist Jenks Miller in 2010, paying homage to the country and gospel influences of her childhood. Mount Moriah released their first EP, The Letting Go, in 2010, and their first full-length album, Mount Moriah, in 2011. They played music that reflected the sounds of the American South through the lens of indie rock. The pair signed with Merge Records, a well-known indie label, and released their second album, Miracle Temple, in 2013. McEntire and Miller collaborated on music with their side project Un Deux Trois during their time away from Mount Moriah, and she toured with Angel Olsen’s backup band.

How to Dance After Mount Moriah’s third album, How to Dance, was released in 2016, McEntire struggled with melancholy and felt at odds with her bandmates. McEntire met Kathleen Hanna, the creator of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and the Julie Ruin, while working on a project for Girls Rock, an organization that utilizes music programs to empower girls, women, and people of disadvantaged genders. Hanna encouraged McEntire to make a solo album and assisted her in sorting through the tracks she was considering for it. McEntire’s solo debut, Lionheart, was released in February 2018 via Merge and attributed to H.C. McEntire. Her second solo album, 2020’s Eno Axis, was still based in country and folk, but the arrangements and production were more light and indie-oriented.
