Early years and personal experiences

Shreya Ghoshal was born on March 12, 1984, in West Bengal’s Murshidabad, to a Bengali family. She grew raised in Rawatbhata, Rajasthan, a tiny village near Kota. Her father, Bishwajit Ghoshal, works for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India as an electrical engineer, and her mother, Sarmistha Ghoshal, is a literature post-graduate. Soumyadeep Ghoshal is her younger brother. She began studying music when she was four years old.

Shreya Ghoshal attended the Atomic Energy Central School No.4 in Rawatbhata till eighth grade, when she was a classmate of Twitter’s current CEO, Parag Agrawal. In 1995, she won the Sangam Kala Group’s All India Light Vocal Music Competition in New Delhi, in the Light Vocal group at the sub-junior level. When her father was moved to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1997, she and her family were relocated to Mumbai and she attended the Atomic Energy Central School in Anushakti Nagar. She enrolled at the Atomic Energy Junior College to pursue a degree in science. She dropped out of junior college and enrolled in Mumbai’s SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, where she majored in arts and English.

Ghoshal’s mother used to accompany her on the Tanpura during practices, beginning with largely Bengali tunes. Ghoshal began her formal classical music lessons at the age of six. She had 18 months of tuition from Late Kalyanji Bhai and continued her classical music study in Mumbai with Late Mukta Bhide. Her first public appearance was during a club’s yearly event. She began Hindustani classical music studies when she was six years old. She won the television music reality program Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) on the channel Zee TV in 2000 when she was sixteen years old.

Shiladitya Mukhopadhyaya, Ghoshal’s childhood buddy, wedded her in a traditional Bengali wedding on February 5, 2015. Ghoshal had been in love with him for about ten years before they married. Apart from singing, Ghoshal enjoys traveling and reading, but she claims that cooking has a soothing effect on her. Ghoshal gave birth to a baby boy called Devyaan on May 22, 2021 in Mumbai.
